Britain Braces for Record Heatwave, Schools and Transport Affected

Date:

Britain is poised to surpass a 50-year heat record, with experts cautioning that heatwaves will intensify in the future.

Numerous schools nationwide are shutting down early as the nation gears up to exceed the 35.6C June temperature milestone set in 1976 by Wednesday. Projections indicate that temperatures could soar to 36C in London and parts of the South East on Wednesday, potentially reaching as high as 39C in some areas by Thursday’s end.

Authorities in the transportation sector are advising against non-essential travel, while many schools in England and Wales have announced closures or early dismissals this week to safeguard students from overheating in classrooms. Students have been permitted to wear PE attire instead of full school uniforms.

Buckingham School in Buckinghamshire is among the institutions closing on Wednesday and Thursday, shifting to online learning. The school cited inadequate cooling in most buildings and limited outdoor shade as reasons for the closure. All scheduled activities and trips have been canceled as well.

This heatwave coincides with the 50th anniversary of the notorious heatwave that led to water shortages, crop failures, food price hikes, and people resorting to using foil on windows to combat the sun.

Professor Stephen Belcher, the Met Office’s chief scientist, emphasized the escalating frequency and severity of heatwaves in the UK. The current red extreme heat warning, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the 1976 heatwave, serves as a stark reminder of the worsening trend. The prolonged extreme heat coupled with high humidity poses significant challenges for communities and individual health.

The Met Office has issued a red weather warning for extreme heat spanning from London to Swansea and Somerset to Birmingham from 9am Wednesday to 9pm Thursday.

Amidst the extreme heat, safety concerns have prompted Network Rail to advise passengers to travel only if absolutely necessary within the red warning zone from Tuesday to Thursday. Chiltern Railways, operating between London and Birmingham, has already canceled over half of its usual services.

Britain has raised its second-ever ‘heat-health’ Red Alert due to the upcoming heatwave. The UK Health Security Agency has placed six regions under the red heat-health alert from 1am Wednesday to 11pm Thursday. The West Midlands, East Midlands, South East, South West, London, and East of England fall under this alert, while an amber alert covers the North West, North East, and Yorkshire and the Humber during the same period.

Health officials are cautioning NHS and social care services to prepare for the heatwave, warning that forecasted temperatures pose a risk to life, even for the general population. The anticipated temperatures for this heatwave are expected to surpass the 1976 record set in Hampshire by several degrees and could approach the UK’s all-time high of 40.3C recorded in July 2022.

Professor Hayley Fowler from Newcastle University underscored the severity of the impacts of the 1976 heatwave, emphasizing the need for rapid reductions in fossil fuel emissions and adaptations in infrastructure to cope with future extreme heatwaves.

Professor Ed Hawkins from the University of Reading highlighted the significant difference in heatwave severity between 1976 and the present, stressing that future generations could face even hotter conditions if emission levels remain unchecked. Retailers are witnessing a surge in sales of cooling appliances and sun protection products as households strive to combat the extreme heat.
