According to a recent survey, seven out of ten Brits consider watching a captivating TV series to be the ultimate source of shock and entertainment. Popular shows like The Traitors, Stranger Things, and Happy Valley top the list of programs that keep viewers on the edge of their seats during a cozy night in.
Apart from these modern favorites, classic dramatic moments from soap operas also hold a special place in British viewers’ hearts. Iconic scenes like Den serving Angie divorce papers on Christmas Day in 1986’s EastEnders, as well as memorable storylines like “Who shot Phil?” from 2001 and the dramatic tram crash from Corrie, resonate with audiences.
The intense narrative of series like Game of Thrones, particularly the shocking Red Wedding massacre, ranks among the top heart-stopping moments in TV history.
The emotional impact of watching The Traitors seems to extend beyond just entertainment, with 19% of Brits reporting an increase in heart rate during intense scenes. The survey reveals that the Traitor vs. Traitor showdown was a pulse-pounding moment for 37% of respondents.
A significant majority of the surveyed Brits, 71%, admit that The Traitors leaves them more shaken compared to traditional scripted dramas, with 63% finding it challenging to unwind after an episode.
Toby Earle, a TV expert and critic involved in the study conducted by Asda pharmacy, explains the fascination of Brits with gripping TV shows that evoke intense emotions and keep audiences captivated.
He highlights the immersive experience of being immersed in a show’s storyline, where unexpected twists and turns create a rush of adrenaline. The unpredictability of these narratives offers a thrilling experience, with viewers eagerly anticipating the next gripping development.
The survey findings underscore the preference of 83% of viewers for shows that elicit excitement and breathless moments, with many needing a moment to recover, such as making a cup of tea, after watching intense scenes.
