Tragedy struck as a climber lost their life and two others sustained severe injuries following a tragic fall from a cliff along the Pembrokeshire coast.
First responders swiftly arrived at the incident site at St Govan’s Head earlier today. The rescue operation involved multiple teams from Fishguard, St Govan’s, and Tenby, with support from HM Coastguard and Irish Coastguard helicopters, Wales Air Ambulance, and an RNLI lifeboat from Angle.
Authorities were notified by the ambulance service at 4:25 pm, prompting a rapid deployment to the scene. While two climbers were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, the unfortunate fatality was confirmed at the location, with no suspicion of foul play.
A spokesperson from the police department stated: “Dyfed-Powys Police received a distress call from the ambulance service at 4:25 pm on Thursday, February 12, expressing concerns about three individuals at St Govan’s Head, Pembrokeshire. Our officers, along with various other agencies, promptly responded to the incident.
“The injured climbers were taken to the hospital for treatment of their injuries, which are not considered life-threatening. Regrettably, one individual was pronounced deceased at the scene. The circumstances surrounding the death are not suspicious, and the family has been informed. Our sympathies are with them during this difficult time.”
The British Mountaineering Council has highlighted that among the 300 established climbing routes, some are graded above “Very Hard Severe.” Certain sections of the area have unstable rocks, leading to closures of cliffs for climbing during the nesting season of seabirds.
