Reminiscing on his past experience, an England supporter is envisioning a World Cup final for the Three Lions due to his attendance at the 1966 victory alongside his father. Dave Thompson, a businessman and avid Everton fan, accompanied his late father, Keith, a semi-professional footballer, to Wembley after winning two tickets in a raffle at Chelmsford City in Essex.
Despite his young age at the time, Dave recalls only the resounding noise from that historical moment in English football. Now, at the age of 64, he shared that his journey to the US for the tournament, covering travel and tickets, amounted to approximately £20,000. Expressing his dedication to the event, Dave mentioned that he has been attending World Cups since 2010 and has no intentions of halting his tradition.
Opting to solely support England, Dave emphasized his preference for watching his home team play, rather than spending hundreds of dollars on other matches. With a history of attending World Cups in South Africa, Brazil, Russia, and Qatar, Dave currently serves as the President and former vice chairman of Marine FC in Merseyside, while also holding an Everton season ticket and being a regular sponsor.
Although work commitments may require him to return home during the tournament, Dave expressed his willingness to come back to the US if England advances to the final. Before the match against Ghana in Boston, Dave enjoyed a fishing trip and looks forward to witnessing England’s potential progression to the knockout phase.
Ghana’s goalkeeper, Lawrence Ati-Zigi, is racing against time to recover from a groin injury sustained during a game against Panama, where he was substituted at halftime. However, signs indicate his possible return to face England, as he has resumed light training and received positive feedback from goalkeeper coach Daniel Gaspar.
