Authorities have advised residents to evacuate their residences after an “object” was discovered following the arrest of a 21-year-old man suspected of trying to join a prohibited organization known as Daesh under the Terrorism Act 2000.
A substantial police presence, including officers from Counter Terrorism Policing South East (CTPSE), Counter Terrorism Policing South West (CTPSW), and Avon and Somerset Police, was observed in Francombe Grove, Horfield. The operation, led by CTPSE, led to the uncovering of a “suspicious item” during a property search.
As a precautionary measure, a “small number” of residents in nearby properties were instructed to leave their homes while the police secured the area and examined the object.
The arrested individual is currently in police custody, as reported by Bristol Live.
Chief Inspector Keith Smith of Avon and Somerset Police emphasized that the operation was pre-planned and reassured the community that public safety is a top priority. He mentioned the ongoing police presence in Horfield and the temporary cordon placed around the property for safety reasons.
A spokesperson for CTPSE confirmed the arrest of a 21-year-old man from Bristol for attempting to join a proscribed organization. The joint operation involved officers from Avon and Somerset Police and CTPSW.
The community in Horfield may notice an increased police presence during the investigation. Due to the discovery of a suspicious item in a residential property, the area has been cordoned off as a precautionary measure pending further assessment.
