Two men encountered trouble in the sea at Cullercoats beach in North Tyneside, leading to a fatal outcome for one individual and leaving the other in critical condition, according to authorities.
The incident unfolded on Sunday evening, prompting an emergency response to assist the men in distress. Despite rescue efforts, one man in his 20s lost his life at the scene, while the second man of the same age was rushed to the hospital, where he remains in serious but stable condition as confirmed by Northumbria Police.
The families of both men have been notified and are receiving support during this difficult time, the police added.
Eyewitnesses described challenging conditions with waves reaching three to four feet in height when the men disappeared. Julie Anne, a regular beachgoer, recounted witnessing a significant rescue operation involving multiple individuals deploying a rescue buoy into the water.
Chief Inspector Simon Wotton of Northumbria Police expressed deep sorrow over the tragic incident, extending sympathies to all affected parties and acknowledging the collaborative efforts of partner agencies involved in the response.
