“GAME to Close Independent Stores, Focus on Online Presence”

Date:

A popular retail chain is shutting down all of its independent stores. GAME has announced the closure of its three remaining standalone stores by April 2026. Despite this, GAME’s online platform will continue operating, and the company will maintain a presence through concession stands in Sports Direct and House of Fraser stores, totaling more than 200 locations. This decision follows GAME’s earlier filing for administration.

Over the past few years, GAME has been reducing its store count as leases expire, with the closure of its Basingstoke headquarters last year. In an interview in 2023, the Managing Director, Nick Arran, emphasized that gaming remains their primary focus, refuting claims of a shift towards other products like toys.

“We are committed to gaming as our core business and aim to be the leading provider of physical video games,” stated Arran.

GAME’s official website states that gift cards and eVouchers are valid for two years from purchase, with any remaining balance void after the card’s expiration, and restricted for use within the United Kingdom.

In unrelated aviation news, Icelandic airline PLAY, based in Reykjavík, declared bankruptcy and ceased operations on September 29 of the previous year. According to reports, approximately 400 employees are facing potential job losses, with uncertainty surrounding the payment of their wages.

Established in July 2019, PLAY began operations at Keflavík International Airport in Reykjavik in June 2021, serving several European destinations. Despite the airline’s initial success, operations were abruptly halted, leaving passengers and employees in limbo.
