A woman was deeply saddened when a portion of her parents’ gravestone was stolen from Lambhill Cemetery in Glasgow on what would have been her mother’s 85th birthday. Lynne Brown was shocked to find that three large granite kerbing pieces surrounding the grave had been removed. The theft is suspected to have been premeditated due to the valuable nature of granite, known for its durability and high resale value on the black market.
Expressing her emotions, Lynne described a mix of sadness, confusion, and anger upon discovering the missing kerbing. She emphasized the audacity of the act, noting that the theft would have required significant effort to remove the cemented pieces, each measuring 6ft in length. Following the incident, Lynne immediately reported the theft to both the cemetery staff and Police Scotland for investigation.
Despite efforts to seek answers and assistance, Lynne expressed frustration at the lack of progress in recovering the stolen granite, which would cost over £1700 to replace. Concerned about a potential recurrence of theft, she highlighted the need for accountability and justice in resolving the matter. Reflecting on the sentimental value of the gravestone, Lynne shared the story of how the family had honored their parents by renewing the grave in 2017 after their mother’s passing.
In response to the incident, a spokesperson from Glasgow City Council expressed sympathy for Lynne’s distress and stressed the importance of reporting any theft to the authorities for a thorough investigation.
