Heartbreaking Mix-Up: Man’s Father’s Ashes Scattered Miles from Late Mother

Date:

A man mourning the loss of his father faced heartbreak when his father’s ashes were mistakenly scattered over 200 miles away from where his late mother was laid to rest. David Bishop, aged 60, had intended to inter his father, John, 89, beside his mother at Babworth Crematorium in Nottinghamshire.

John had relocated to a care facility to be nearer to his son following his wife’s passing in June 2020. The couple had a close relationship, with John moving closer to his son after his wife’s demise. Tragically, John suffered a fatal heart attack after undergoing routine medical checks in April.

David had entrusted Co-op Funeralcare to handle the funeral arrangements as they had also managed his late wife’s funeral, as per his father’s wishes. Although John wanted his funeral to be in south Wales, he specifically desired to have his ashes interred alongside his wife in Nottinghamshire.

Following the funeral on May 26 at Gwent Crematorium in south Wales, David planned to fulfill his father’s final wish. However, he was informed that the ashes had already been scattered in the Garden of Remembrance, as the staff mistakenly believed it was the directive from the funeral director.

Expressing his disbelief, David shared, “I was thinking, ‘am I really hearing this? How can this be? It just doesn’t feel right.’ I’m still struggling to comprehend it.” He described the situation as disrespectful towards his father at the end of his life.

John was remembered as a beloved and respected individual with a striking appearance resembling Father Christmas due to his distinctive beard. He began his career as an apprentice in Cwmbran, eventually advancing to become a mining engineer.

Gwent Crematorium issued an apology to David and assured him of conducting an investigation into the matter. Despite the ongoing inquiry, David expressed feelings of emptiness and helplessness, unsure of his next steps.

A spokesperson for Co-op Funeralcare acknowledged that the instructions given to Gwent Crematorium aligned with the client’s wishes. They expressed deep regret for the distress caused and pledged continued support to David and his family throughout the ordeal.

Newport City Council disclosed that an investigation was underway to determine the cause of the error and prevent similar incidents in the future. They publicly apologized to David and his family for the distressing situation they were facing.
