A high school student shared his harrowing experience of seeking refuge in a classroom during a tragic shooting incident that claimed 10 lives and left many injured in a secluded town in Canada.
Darian Quist, a senior student at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School, described arriving at school around 1:30 pm when an alarm prompted lockdown procedures. Initially unaware of the severity of the situation, Darian and his peers eventually realized the gravity of the events unfolding.
The violence resulted in the loss of 10 lives and injuries to 25 individuals. Authorities issued a shelter-in-place alert, describing the suspect as a female with brown hair wearing a dress.
Darian recounted the tense moments inside the classroom, where he and fellow students barricaded the doors using tables for over two hours until police arrived to safely evacuate them. Upon exiting the building, Darian reunited with his mother Shelley at a nearby community center.
Shelley, who was at work during the incident, witnessed law enforcement activities near the school and was urged by colleagues to stay put. Worried for her son’s safety, she rushed to the community center upon hearing police breaking into his classroom.
Tragically, six victims were discovered within the school premises, while a seventh died en route to the hospital. The suspected shooter was found deceased at the school, having inflicted a self-inflicted injury.
Additionally, two individuals were found deceased at a nearby residence, believed to be linked to the shooting. Authorities have withheld the attacker’s identity for privacy and to maintain the integrity of the investigation.
As a result of the tragedy, Tumbler Ridge Secondary School, under School District 59, will remain closed for the week. Support services will be provided, with details to be communicated through social media platforms.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed his condolences for the devastating events, emphasizing unity and compassion in the face of adversity. He assured support for the affected community and praised the bravery of first responders.
