Iran Cracks Down on Alleged Collaborators; 3,000+ Detained

Date:

Iranian security forces have detained more than 3,000 individuals since the commencement of the conflict with the United States, alleging collaboration with the “enemy.”

Despite President Donald Trump’s assurance to rebels of imminent assistance when the war began in February, a total of 3,296 people have been taken into custody.

Around 684 individuals are suspected of espionage and engaging in “operational activities” for Israel, as acknowledged by Tehran’s judiciary to local media. Notably, properties belonging to approximately 100 of the accused in Isfahan Province have been confiscated by Iranian authorities in a broad crackdown.

A security analyst conveyed to the Mirror that the implemented measures led to numerous arrests, substantial asset seizures, heightened prosecutions on national security grounds, and a surge in capital charges against those accused of cooperating with foreign foes.

The crackdown has specifically targeted political dissidents, ethnic minorities, activists, journalists, and individuals believed to oppose the state. A delicate ceasefire in Lebanon, crucial for a peace agreement with Iran, came under threat after Israeli forces fired in the southern region, resulting in two fatalities and two injuries.

Hezbollah’s deputy head of the political council cautioned that the group remains vigilant and prepared to confront any violations by Israel. The militant organization accused Israel of violating the ceasefire, while Israel’s military asserted that it targeted armed individuals posing an immediate threat.

Iran’s chief negotiator Mohammad Ghalibaf’s declaration further escalated tensions concerning Iran and Hezbollah in Lebanon, emphasizing Iran’s intent to manage the Strait of Hormuz according to its terms, in defiance of Trump’s call for unconditional access.

Following an interim peace agreement between the US and Iran and a subsequent closure of the Strait by Tehran, uncertainties persist regarding potential charges for transit through the strategic waterway. Previously, passage through the Strait between Iran and Oman was unrestricted.

Iran has established a new governmental body to collect fees from passing ships, insisting on vessel registration with the Persian Gulf Strait Authority before crossing. Talks in Switzerland resulted in an agreement to release $12 billion in frozen Iranian funds, aiming to establish a foundation for lasting peace.

Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich emphasized that Israeli troops will remain in Lebanon as long as Hezbollah exists and the current government holds power.
