Irish President’s Sister Among Detained Citizens on Aid Flotilla
Reports indicate that Dr. Margaret Connolly, the sister of Irish President Catherine Connolly, was aboard one of the ten boats in a 60-vessel flotilla intercepted by Israeli forces in international waters. The Global Sumud Flotilla disclosed that the interception occurred about 70 nautical miles off Cyprus, resulting in at least six of the 15 Irish participants being detained.
The Global Sumud Flotilla has expressed concern as it lost contact with the intercepted boats. Videos from Dr. Connolly and five others have surfaced, filmed prior to their detention. In her video message, Dr. Connolly mentioned her involvement in the humanitarian mission to Gaza to deliver essential aid and medical supplies to the people there.
Karen Moynihan, the Irish lead for the Global Sumud Flotilla, condemned the detention of six Irish citizens, labeling it as a “kidnapping.” She further criticized the Irish government for its silence on the matter and called for the release of the detained individuals.
A spokesperson for the flotilla emphasized that the participants were acting within the law to deliver aid to Palestinians in Gaza and expressed concerns for the safety of all Irish participants and others on the flotilla. Amnesty International Ireland also condemned the ongoing atrocities against Palestinians and urged action from the international community.
Various Irish leaders, including Sinn Fein’s Mary Lou McDonald and People Before Profit’s Richard Boyd Barrett, have called on the government to secure the release of the activists and take a stand against the violations of international law. The Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed that it is monitoring the situation and will provide consular assistance to impacted Irish citizens.
The Israel Foreign Ministry labeled the flotilla a “provocation” and denied the presence of aid on board, urging participants to change course. The situation remains tense as concerns grow over the safety and welfare of all individuals involved in the humanitarian mission.
