Police in Northern Ireland have apprehended a 27-year-old man on suspicion of attempted murder following an incident where an officer was struck by a stolen police vehicle. The event occurred in the Model Farm estate in Downpatrick around 4:45 am on Sunday. The injured officer, as per the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI), sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
The sequence of events unfolded when officers tried to halt a vehicle in the Fountain Street area. Subsequently, the vehicle was discovered in Ballymote Walk, where law enforcement observed a man fleeing from it. The individual was pursued by officers towards Colmcille Road, according to Belfast Live.
Upon returning to their vehicle, officers found an individual in the driver’s seat driving recklessly. Allegedly, the vehicle was then driven directly at an officer, who discharged a shot before being hit.
The suspect abandoned the police vehicle shortly afterward and fled the scene. The 27-year-old suspect was later taken into custody on suspicion of attempted murder.
Immediate medical attention was administered at the scene by police colleagues, with support from the local community members. The injured officer was transported to the hospital by the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service for treatment of serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
Forensic examination is underway after the recovery of the police vehicle, officer’s weapon, and ammunition. Assistant Chief Constable Melanie Jones stated that the Police Ombudsman for Northern Ireland was alerted as standard protocol when a police firearm is used.
She emphasized the risks faced by officers in carrying out their duties and condemned the assault on the officer, expressing solidarity and support for him and his family. Detectives from the Serious Crime branch have initiated an attempted murder investigation.
Authorities urge anyone with information or relevant footage of the incident to contact the police. Reports can be made via phone, online, or anonymously through Crimestoppers.
