“James Bulger’s Father Fights Parole for Son’s Killer”

Date:

Ralph Bulger, the father of James Bulger, has declared his determination to oppose Jon Venables, the individual responsible for his son’s death, as Venables seeks parole. Venables, now 43, committed the heinous act when he was only 10 years old, alongside his accomplice Robert Thompson, by abducting two-year-old James from a shopping center in Merseyside. Following their detention in juvenile facilities and subsequent transfer to adult prisons, the two have been incarcerated for the past two decades.

Venables, who has a history of imprisonment, is now facing a Parole Board hearing that could grant him freedom, a prospect vehemently contested by Ralph Bulger. In an interview with The Sun, Mr. Bulger expressed his intention to attend the parole hearing along with his ex-wife Denise Fergus. He emphasized his unwavering dedication to seeking justice for his son, James, and confronting Jon Venables for the pain inflicted on their family.

Despite the emotional turmoil stirred by Venables’ parole attempts coinciding with significant anniversaries, Ralph Bulger remains resolute in his quest for justice. Each bid for freedom by Venables triggers painful memories and exacerbates the anguish of losing James. Mr. Bulger expressed his distress, stating his determination to ensure that Venables remains incarcerated to prevent any further harm to innocent children.

Venables has made multiple attempts for parole since his initial incarceration in 1993, with previous denials due to concerns about posing a danger to children, including possessing child pornography. The latest parole application in 2023 was rejected by the board, citing ongoing risks, lack of transparency, and the need for Venables to address outstanding issues before considering release.

The decision emphasized the necessity for Venables to mitigate risks, cooperate with professionals, and enhance his relationship with his probation officer before any potential release. This stringent evaluation concluded that Venables’ release at that point would not ensure public safety.
