A significant volcanic eruption today at Kanlaon Volcano on Negros Island in the Philippines resulted in a massive ash cloud rising into the sky around 6 pm local time. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology described the eruption as moderately explosive. This eruption marks the third occurrence on the mountain this year, leading to the issuance of Alert Level 2 in the region with a 4km danger zone perimeter established.
The eruption did not disrupt flights at the Bacolod–Silay International Airport, the nearest airport to Kanlaon Volcano. Mount Kanlaon, standing at 2,465m above sea level, is one of the 24 active volcanoes in the Philippines. In December 2024, an eruption impacted approximately 40,489 individuals in the Visayas, causing an estimated US $681,314 in agricultural damage.
Located on the Pacific ‘Ring of Fire,’ the Philippines frequently experiences volcanic activity and earthquakes. The Kanlaon Volcano, known for its explosive eruptions, seismic activity, and gas emissions, emitted a second massive plume of smoke post-eruption.
