After narrowly escaping a political crisis linked to the Peter Mandelson scandal earlier in the year, Keir Starmer, the Labour leader, has been projecting a strong stance. Starmer has been steadfast in his commitment to staying in office, emphasizing that a leadership contest would bring chaos to the nation. He has consistently maintained that the electorate granted him a five-year mandate to implement the changes he pledged before Labour’s significant victory in 2024.
This resolute message was reiterated during the Mandelson scandal, following Labour’s significant defeat in the recent local elections, and once again after Andy Burnham’s triumph in the Makerfield by-election, which reignited hope among Labour MPs that Nigel Farage’s Reform UK could be overcome.
In a recent call with Labour staff, the Prime Minister emphasized the importance of unity within the party and the avoidance of internal conflicts that could disrupt progress. However, it seems that this message has not resonated well within the party ranks, as more MPs are now voicing their calls for Starmer to step down, even among those who supported him after the local elections setback.
Crucially, support from the Cabinet is waning, with senior ministers such as Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper and Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander joining the chorus urging Starmer to consider resignation. The absence of collective Cabinet endorsement following Burnham’s electoral victory has been notable, with most members maintaining silence on the matter.
In a significant development on Sunday, Peter Kyle, speaking on behalf of the government, declined to rule out the possibility of the Prime Minister stepping down in the near future. Kyle mentioned that the Prime Minister is evaluating the “political realities” in light of Burnham’s win, hinting that a decision regarding Starmer’s future could be expected within the next 24-48 hours.
