David Beckham’s shirts worn during the game where he received a red card as England captain are up for auction. This marks him as the first player to be sent off twice while playing for the Three Lions. The incidents occurred during matches against Austria in the World Cup at Old Trafford in 2005 and Argentina in the 1998 World Cup.
The shirts from the 2005 match, worn by Beckham in the first half and after the break, will be auctioned, with an estimated value of around £30,000. David Convery, the Head of Sporting Memorabilia at BUDDS auctioneers, highlighted the significance of these shirts in Beckham’s England career, despite the negative context surrounding the red cards.
Beckham’s red card in the 2005 World Cup qualifying match against Austria at Old Trafford led to him becoming the first England captain to be sent off. Both Beckham and his then-manager Sven-Göran Eriksson expressed discontent with the decision, deeming it “harsh.” Even the Austrian coach admitted to feeling that the dismissal was unjust.
Currently, Beckham is involved in the 2026 World Cup in the United States, maintaining communication with England captain Harry Kane. Kane, who shares a hometown with Beckham, received praise from the football legend for matching his record of 115 caps. This achievement places Kane as the third most capped player, following Peter Shilton and Wayne Rooney.
Reflecting on his accomplishment, Kane expressed his pride in being among football icons like David Beckham, whom he idolized growing up. Beckham’s encouragement and support through voice notes further inspired Kane to reach this milestone. Looking ahead, Kane is determined and enthusiastic about continuing his football journey.
