A man, identified as Sarbast Lokman, is facing charges of burglary, theft, and attempted burglary after allegedly targeting Labour peer Luciana Berger by visiting her London residence twice within two days in April. The accused purportedly attempted to enter the property through the rear door on April 11 but resorted to stealing items from the back garden upon finding it locked.
The following day, Lokman allegedly returned to the premises and succeeded in gaining access to a car parked outside Baroness Berger’s residence, stealing items valued at £350. Among the stolen possessions were Marc Jacobs sunglasses, children’s wellington boots, a first aid kit, an emergency blanket, a picnic blanket, and clothing items.
Additionally, Lokman is accused of pilfering a gift-wrapped Neom candle, a bottle of car fluid, and loose change from the vehicle. During the court proceedings, Baroness Berger expressed feeling targeted following the incidents due to her prominent position in the Jewish community and as a former MP.
Baroness Berger, who previously served as the MP for Liverpool Wavertree and held ministerial roles in climate change, public health, and mental health, left the Labour Party in 2019 but rejoined under Sir Keir Starmer’s leadership in 2023. In 2024, she was appointed as a life peer in the House of Lords as Baroness Berger of Barnhill.
Lokman, who is also accused of attempting to burgle a home in Enfield, had his trial adjourned to July 6 due to the unavailability of a Kurdish interpreter. Despite denying all charges, Lokman remains in custody awaiting trial since his initial court appearance in May.
