A man in Norfolk, Martyn Walker, 55, took over £28,000 from his 83-year-old mother with dementia to fuel his growing obsession with Lego. The theft involved withdrawing £28,070.20 from two of his mother’s bank accounts while she was residing in a care facility in Bury St Edmunds in 2022.
During a hearing at Norwich Magistrates’ Court, it was disclosed that Walker had initially struggled to pay fees owed to the care home. However, he later confessed via email that he had used his mother’s funds. The stolen amounts of £16,095 and £11,975 were taken between January 2023 and July 2024, primarily to cover expenses but also to support his Lego hobby, petrol, and bills.
Walker admitted guilt to two counts of theft, leading to an 18-month suspended prison sentence given by Judge David Pugh. The judge emphasized the breach of trust and vulnerability of the victim, highlighting the deliberate targeting of a defenseless elderly woman. Despite the severity of the offenses, Walker’s remorse and cooperation were considered in the sentencing decision.
In his statement to the court, Walker acknowledged his wrongdoing, expressing regret for taking advantage of the situation. He recognized the impact on his family, particularly his wife who only recently learned about his actions. As part of his sentence, Walker was ordered to complete 180 hours of unpaid work and engage in up to 15 days of Rehabilitation Activity Requirement (RAR).
