Consumer advocate Martin Lewis is encouraging 14 million customers who have reached the end of their mobile contracts to seek better deals. The founder of Moneysavingexpert.com cautioned that staying with the same provider post-contract could result in significant yearly financial losses.
Speaking on The Martin Lewis Money Show LIVE on ITV, Lewis emphasized the negative impact of loyalty by highlighting continuous price increases for those who remain with their mobile company without exploring other options. In contrast, he praised savvy consumers who shop around and switch providers, enjoying repeated price reductions.
To determine contract status, individuals can text INFO to 85075 for free. If the response indicates zero early termination or cancellation charges, customers can freely switch providers without penalties, as explained by Lewis. He recommended utilizing comparison websites for finding the most cost-effective SIM-only deals, noting they typically offer better prices than direct purchases from mobile operators.
Among the current offerings, Lebara provides a 10GB plan for £3.50, leveraging Vodafone’s network. For higher data needs, Lewis suggested ID Mobile, which utilizes the Three signal and offers a 50GB plan for £3.80 per month.
Regarding provider options, Lewis clarified that the UK has only four primary networks – EE, Vodafone, Three, and 02 – with other providers operating on these networks. Customers hesitant to switch to lesser-known providers were advised to contact their current provider, express intent to leave, and inquire about matching competitive prices.
For customers looking to retain their mobile numbers when switching providers, Lewis recommended texting ‘PAC’ to 65075 and providing the received code to the new provider. Additionally, he shared a tip that customers might receive enticing retention offers from their current provider upon requesting a PAC code to switch.
The show also addressed handset security and theft prevention strategies. Lewis recommended capturing and storing the IMEI number, a unique 15-digit identifier, to aid in blocking stolen handsets and deterring theft.
By following these tips, consumers can navigate the mobile market more effectively, ensuring they get the best deals and protect their devices from potential theft.
