An inquiry has been initiated following the mysterious deaths of 14 elephants near a national park in Africa. The carcasses were found in various locations within a 15km to 30km radius of Amboseli National Park in the south of Kenya, situated in eastern Africa.
The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) has confirmed that experts are investigating the incident. Specimens have been sent for analysis to determine the cause of death, with possibilities such as disease or poisoning being considered.
This event marks the first instance in decades where such a large number of elephant deaths have been recorded in the African region. Poaching, the illegal hunting and killing of wildlife, has been effectively combated in the area.
KWS has stated that there is no conclusive evidence pointing to a single cause of death for all 14 elephants. The deceased elephants varied in age and gender, indicating that the deaths were not confined to a specific family or age group.
Reports suggest that investigators from the University of Nairobi have detected a potential toxin in some of the elephant remains. Further analysis is being conducted to ascertain if this substance contributed to the fatalities.
Additionally, KWS is exploring various environmental factors, including water sources and potential contaminants, to determine if the elephants were exposed to a common hazardous element.
The Amboseli ecosystem, bordering Tanzania, is renowned for its wildlife. Data from the Amboseli Trust for Elephants indicates a population of over 2,000 elephants in the ecosystem as of the previous year.
