Levi Bellfield is under investigation for the hammer killings of Lin and Megan Russell, with authorities planning to obtain a new DNA sample from him. The notorious criminal had previously admitted to assaulting Lin, her daughter Megan, and their surviving daughter Josie in a brutal attack that occurred in Chillenden, Kent, in 1996.
Officials from the Criminal Cases Review Commission are preparing to conduct a forensic evaluation of the evidence using advanced testing methods, including a new DNA sample from Bellfield, who is currently incarcerated at HMP Frankland. The timing for the sample collection has not been finalized yet.
In a similar development, Michael Stone, who was convicted of the murders, recently provided a fresh DNA sample for analysis by the investigative team. Stone, now 66 and also housed at HMP Frankland, was arrested following a Crimewatch TV appeal and subsequent confession from his psychiatrist.
Bellfield, serving a life sentence for other murders, had initially confessed to the Russell killings but later retracted his statement. Despite his claims, no evidence has supported his involvement in the case or other crimes he falsely admitted to.
The collection of new saliva samples is crucial for implementing modern DNA separation techniques, with a focus on comparing any potential DNA matches to Bellfield. Recent advancements in DNA testing, as seen in the case of Andrew Malkinson, who was wrongfully convicted of rape, are instrumental in uncovering the truth.
Specific items of interest include samples from a bloodstained shoelace used to restrain Lin, as well as tapings from the victims’ bodies that have not been reexamined since 1996. Stone, maintaining his innocence throughout, was highlighted as a suspect after a Crimewatch appeal, claiming memory loss regarding his whereabouts during the crime.
Bellfield allegedly admitted to the murders while conversing with prison psychologists. The ongoing forensic analysis, including the evaluation of new DNA evidence, aims to shed light on the long-debated case and potentially reveal the true perpetrator behind the tragic events.
