Australian tennis player Nick Kyrgios, a former Wimbledon finalist, acknowledged his positive cocaine test result, leading to his provisional suspension from the sport. The 31-year-old, who faced Novak Djokovic in the 2022 singles final, has encountered multiple setbacks, including injuries, which have significantly impacted his ranking, now at 919th place. Kyrgios took to social media to disclose the incident, admitting to the drug test failure in Mallorca during a lower-tier tournament in June. He expressed regret, stating, “I recently failed a drug test in Mallorca after testing positive for cocaine. I made a huge mistake and take full responsibility for it.”
Competing athletes are prohibited from using cocaine as a doping substance during tournaments, with varying penalties depending on the circumstances of use. Kyrgios, known for his struggles with mental health, attributed his challenges to past issues with alcohol and substance abuse. Reflecting on the nearing end of his career due to recurring injuries over the past two years, he confessed, “At times I’ve felt helpless and alone. None of that excuses what I did.”
Despite his recent participation in Wimbledon doubles, where he received a wild card alongside Alexander Bublik and was eliminated in the initial round, Kyrgios now faces the repercussions of his actions. The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) disclosed that Kyrgios’ sample was collected on June 22, with the positive result confirmed on July 17 following his Wimbledon appearance. A mandatory provisional suspension was enforced on August 4, unchallenged by Kyrgios.
The ITIA will oversee the case as it unfolds, emphasizing the importance of maintaining integrity in the sport.
