“Nurse Removed for Misconduct at Lewes Hospice”

Date:

A nurse at St Peter and St James Hospice in Lewes, East Sussex, Naomi Butcher, has been removed from her position after engaging in inappropriate behavior. Butcher, 60, was found to have endangered a terminally ill patient by administering an excessive dose of medication. Furthermore, she failed to report the error and falsely claimed to have given the correct dosage.

Additionally, Butcher made insensitive remarks to a family requesting to visit their deceased relative, insinuating culturally insensitive beliefs. The Nursing and Midwifery Council found Butcher’s actions to constitute a pattern of misconduct, posing unwarranted risks to patients and displaying discriminatory behavior.

An investigation revealed numerous instances of medication errors by Butcher, including incorrect dosages and missed administrations to patients. The panel overseeing the case concluded that Butcher’s actions impaired her fitness to practice as a nurse.

Despite denying some allegations, Butcher’s lack of engagement during the trial indicated an absence of challenge to the presented evidence. Witness statements from colleagues at the hospice corroborated the concerning behavior exhibited by Butcher.

Following an internal review prompted by multiple complaints, Butcher resigned from her position at the hospice. The facility subsequently reported the concerns to the Nursing and Midwifery Council, leading to Butcher’s removal from the nursing register.

The hospice emphasized its commitment to patient care and professional standards, underscoring the importance of upholding ethical conduct in healthcare settings.
