“Octopus Energy Launches ‘Zero Bills’ Homes in UK”

Date:

Octopus Energy is introducing 300 homes labeled as “zero bills” residences, promising occupants a decade of complimentary gas and electricity services. The energy provider has collaborated with Prosperity Group to construct these homes in Wisbech, Cambridgeshire, with an anticipated completion date in 2028 for subsequent occupancy.

The specific pricing for these properties, which are equipped with heat pumps, batteries, and solar panels, has not been disclosed yet. This initiative arrives amidst news of an impending rise in the energy price cap due to increased oil costs following the Iran conflict, with the current cap set at £1,641 annually for an average household.

Octopus has already sanctioned over 6,000 “zero bills” homes in partnership with prominent developers, offering a variety of rental options including private rent, privately owned, and shared ownership properties. The company’s objective is to reach 100,000 Zero Bills homes by 2030, with the initiative already active in several countries including Germany, France, New Zealand, and the UK.

Recent data from Octopus indicates a surge in sales of heat pumps (up by 103%), solar panels (up by 78%), and electric vehicle charger inquiries (up by 42%) as consumers in the UK seek to enhance their energy self-sufficiency.

Nigel Banks, Zero Bills Director at Octopus Energy, emphasized the importance of shielding households from fluctuating energy prices, highlighting the attainability of living without an energy bill through their Zero Bills tariff. Joe Billingham, Chairman of Prosperity Group, echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the integration of cutting-edge technology to enhance living experiences and ensure long-term investment performance.

A recent study by Uswitch reveals that energy suppliers are hoarding approximately £3 billion in customer credit, urging households to check if they are eligible for reimbursements. The total customer credit has surged by £179 million compared to the previous year, with the average home overpaying by nearly £200.
