Recent data released today indicates a significant increase in petrol prices across the UK, rising by more than 10p per liter since the commencement of the US-Iran conflict. The ongoing surge in fuel costs shows no signs of slowing down, with the average price per liter of unleaded petrol surpassing 140p, varying by location within the UK. Notably, motorists in areas like Cherwell and Great Yarmouth are experiencing a price hike of over 12p per liter compared to pre-conflict levels.
Government-published retailer data reveals the current average prices of unleaded petrol and highlights the disparities in fuel costs based on geographical locations. An interactive map has been introduced to showcase the latest average petrol prices for each UK region, along with the percentage increase from before the conflict erupted on February 28.
The escalation in petrol prices is noticeable in various local authority areas, with North Warwickshire facing the highest costs reaching nearly 145p per liter for E10 unleaded petrol. Over 130 local districts have now surpassed the 140p per liter mark, reflecting the widespread impact of the fuel price surge.
As the US-Iran conflict unfolds, UK motorists are estimated to incur an additional £15 million in daily fuel expenses, attributing to the continuous rise in petrol prices nationwide. Major petrol retailers, including Asda Express, are reflecting these price increases, with Asda Express currently charging the highest average price for unleaded petrol at 142.9p per liter. The Competition and Markets Authority has heightened its vigilance over petrol and diesel prices amidst the escalating Middle East tension.
Despite the surge in fuel costs, supermarkets like Tesco, Morrisons, and Sainsbury’s remain competitive in pricing, with Tesco leading among the big four supermarkets at 138.2p per liter. On the regulatory front, the Petrol Retailers Association has expressed concerns over ministerial statements potentially inciting abuse towards fuel retail staff, prompting cautious withdrawal from certain engagements.
