Today, a police chief expressed deep regret for missed chances leading up to the tragic Manchester synagogue terror attack.
Jihad Al-Shamie, aged 35, fatally attacked two individuals and wounded four others at the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue using a vehicle and a knife before being shot by law enforcement.
Prior to the incident, authorities had confiscated Al-Shamie’s mobile devices containing evidence of his extremist beliefs and fixation on terrorism. Unfortunately, this evidence was not examined until after the attack occurred.
Following the sentencing of Al-Shamie’s associate, Mohammad Bashir, to life imprisonment, Greater Manchester Police (GMP) Chief Constable Sir Stephen Watson revealed that legal restrictions had hindered the disclosure of additional information sooner.
Sir Stephen disclosed that GMP had prior knowledge of Al-Shamie regarding two connected criminal matters unrelated to terrorism, resulting in his arrests in February and September 2025.
Reviewing the seized devices later revealed substantial evidence of Al-Shamie’s extremist inclinations, which, if examined earlier, could have prompted further investigation and potentially prevented the attack.
Sir Stephen expressed his deep remorse for the missed opportunity, acknowledging the distress caused by the tragic events and promising full cooperation in ongoing reviews and processes.
He also informed the affected parties and the Jewish community about the developments and emphasized GMP’s unwavering commitment to combat hatred, extremism, and terrorism in Greater Manchester.
The upcoming inquests into the deaths of the victims will comprehensively analyze all aspects of the attack, with the Independent Office for Police Conduct assessing the impact of the failure to examine Al-Shamie’s devices before the incident.
Additionally, a security guard injured during the attack shared the lasting impact on his life, revealing the physical and emotional challenges he continues to face since the tragic event.
Bernard Ayemang, 44, detailed his ongoing struggles with injuries and the emotional toll on his family, emphasizing the profound changes brought about by the traumatic incident.
