Public agencies are facing potential scrutiny regarding the tragic death of Preston Davey as a scheduled inquest is set to recommence. The coroner, Alan Wilson, has indicated that there are grounds to resume the investigation, citing the need to examine the actions and oversights of various public entities. The decision on proceeding with the inquest will be finalized following input from legal representatives of the involved bodies.
During a session at Blackpool Coroner’s Court, Wilson emphasized the necessity of a thorough examination, acknowledging the involvement of multiple professionals who had interacted with Preston prior to his untimely demise. The court learned that despite previous interactions with medical personnel, social workers, and welfare officers, Preston tragically lost his life in July 2023, having been admitted to Blackpool Victoria Hospital on multiple occasions.
The inquest into Preston’s death was initially opened shortly after the incident, but was put on hold during the police investigation, which ultimately led to the conviction of his adoptive parents. Wilson is deliberating whether all pertinent matters were sufficiently explored during the preceding criminal trial before proceeding with the inquest.
Additionally, the Oldham Safeguarding Children’s Partnership has resumed its evaluation of Preston’s case following a pause during the criminal proceedings. This review is anticipated to conclude in January 2027, delaying the possibility of an inquest until its completion.
In Monday’s hearing, discussions revolved around the legal representation for individuals and organizations involved should the inquest proceed. Notably, Preston’s biological relatives, Sara and Debbie Davey, along with his father, Gary Nolan, were represented by legal counsel.
The court was informed of Preston’s tumultuous upbringing, including his removal from his biological mother while she was in custody, eventually leading to his adoption by Varley and McGowan-Fazakerley. Despite prior instances of hospital visits and raised concerns, no further actions were taken to safeguard Preston.
The hearing was adjourned until October, with Wilson extending his sympathies to Preston’s father as the anniversary of Preston’s passing approached. Preston was just 13 months old when he tragically lost his life at the hands of adoptive father Jamie Varley, who was sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder and numerous other offenses. McGowan-Fazakerley received a 25-year prison term for his involvement in the heinous acts.
