In a recent development, specialized law enforcement units dedicated to combating organized crime have been instrumental in apprehending over a thousand individuals suspected of engaging in sexual predation. Employing tactics typically reserved for targeting high-profile criminal figures, these units have successfully apprehended 1,393 individuals involved in sexual offenses, safeguarded 1,351 children, and secured a total of 1,487 years in prison sentences.
While regional organized crime units (ROCUs) traditionally focused on addressing drug trafficking, violent crimes, money laundering, and firearms-related offenses, they have shifted their emphasis towards safeguarding society’s most vulnerable members. Noteworthy convictions include that of Declan Sains, 28, who was sentenced to eight years and three months in prison for engaging in sexual communication with a child and other related offenses. Similarly, Rhys Meikle, 31, received a four-year prison term for his involvement in child sexual offenses.
Chief Constable Trevor Rodenhurst, the lead for ROCUs at the National Police Chiefs’ Council, highlighted the evolving nature of organized crime, with offenders increasingly utilizing digital platforms to target vulnerable individuals. He emphasized the importance of ROCUs adapting their skills, technology, and intelligence capabilities to ensure community safety and combat emerging threats effectively.
Deputy Chief Constable Wendy Gunney, the NPCC lead for national Serious and Organized Crime, stressed the critical role of law enforcement in identifying and safeguarding victims of exploitation and coercion by organized criminals. She commended the effectiveness of ROCUs in combating serious and organized crime, expressing confidence in their ability to contribute significantly to the fight against violence targeting women and girls and online exploitation.
Since their establishment in 2013, ROCUs have expanded into a national network comprising approximately 4,000 officers and staff. Collaborating closely with the National Crime Agency (NCA), these units have achieved significant milestones, including the arrest of 4,363 suspects, securing 7,242 years in prison sentences, protecting over 2,000 children and adults, and making numerous drug and firearms-related arrests.
Furthermore, ROCUs have successfully seized a substantial quantity of illicit items, including firearms, ammunition, cocaine, heroin, and cannabis. This impressive track record underscores the vital role played by specialized law enforcement units in combating organized crime and safeguarding communities.
