In the coming year, a new flight is poised to claim the title of the world’s longest non-stop journey. Presently, Singapore Airlines holds this distinction with a 19-hour flight from Singapore to New York. However, this record is set to be surpassed by Qantas in 2027 with a non-stop route from Sydney, Australia, to London.
Qantas’s upcoming flight boasts a 20,000-liter fuel tank, eliminating the need for refueling stops on its 10,573-mile journey, heralded as the “final frontier of long-haul travel.” Renowned travel expert Simon Calder recently shared insights on this groundbreaking flight, highlighting a specially modified Airbus A350 Twin Jet being constructed for Qantas.
The flight, scheduled for October 2027, will cover over 10,000 miles in a marathon 20-hour journey, marking a pioneering achievement in aviation. While traditional routes to Australia involve layovers, the demand for direct long-haul flights has been evident.
Qantas anticipates catering to a “premium customer base” willing to pay a 20% premium for the convenience of a non-stop flight to Sydney. The airline foresees strong demand from passengers seeking a hassle-free journey without layovers in major hubs such as Singapore, Hong Kong, Dubai, or Abu Dhabi.
Addressing concerns about fuel costs, Qantas remains undeterred, citing increased passenger interest in direct flights to Australia, negating the necessity for layovers in the Middle East. To enhance passenger comfort on the extended flight, Qantas plans to limit the seating capacity to 238 passengers, nearly 100 fewer than other carriers on similar routes.
Initially planned to depart from New York, the record-breaking flight will now take off from London, with New York set to receive its own direct flight, offering a slightly shorter travel time. These developments mark significant milestones in the evolution of long-haul air travel.
