An innovative wearable technology known as a “baby bump” is revolutionizing care for high-risk pregnancies, offering continuous monitoring through a unique ultrasound patch. This device, developed by engineers at the University of California San Diego, can detect early signs of severe conditions like pre-eclampsia by monitoring the unborn baby for extended periods, even with constant movement of the foetus and umbilical cord.
During clinical trials in the UK and US, the ultrasound patch successfully identified abnormal foetal signals, leading to timely medical interventions that could potentially save a baby’s life. The device, named UPatch, not only aids in early complication detection but also has the potential to improve access to prenatal care in low-resource settings where continuous monitoring is challenging.
Professor Sheng Xu of Stanford University highlighted the limitations of current intermittent ultrasound systems used in pregnancy care, emphasizing the importance of continuous monitoring provided by the wearable patch. The lead author, Tom Park, noted the accuracy of the wearable ultrasound patch compared to traditional devices.
