A surge in violent crime is gripping Russia due to the impact of Vladimir Putin’s actions in Ukraine, leading to an increase in heinous acts committed by released criminals now engaged in the conflict.

New shocking statistics reveal a significant rise in murders and sexual crimes, particularly among military personnel following the full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Data from Russia’s garrison military courts show a disturbing increase of 662 murders compared to the years preceding the war, with civilians being the primary targets.

In addition, cases of sexual violence have skyrocketed, with a ninefold increase in rapes and a fivefold rise in other violent sexual offenses. Among the analyzed 549 cases involving Putin’s fighters in military courts, a concerning number, 312, involve sex crimes against minors, including 249 cases against children under 14 years old.

These alarming figures reflect the deteriorating societal conditions within Russia as a result of the ongoing conflict, aside from the devastation witnessed in Ukraine. The military courts recorded a staggering 352 murder cases in 2025, a drastic increase compared to 2018 pre-war statistics. Notably, fatal violent assaults have surged ninefold, as reported by the independent Vot Tak channel.

Retired Colonel-General Leonid Ivashov, a veteran Soviet and Russian commander, expressed grave concern about the war’s impact on Russian society. He highlighted the spread of cruelty and brutality from the battlefield into civilian life, emphasizing the negative repercussions of prolonged military service and repeated deployments on soldiers’ mental well-being.

The situation is exacerbated by Putin’s release of numerous criminals into the armed forces, some of whom commit serious crimes but evade punishment by returning to the frontlines. The civilian population has suffered from horrific acts perpetrated by these individuals, such as murders, rapes, and other violent offenses, causing a significant toll of shame and tragedy.

The cycle of violence continues with reported incidents of atrocious crimes committed by Putin’s fighters, including murder, rape, and domestic abuse, further illustrating the grim consequences of the ongoing conflict on both military personnel and civilians.
