The Met Office has issued a weather warning lasting 54 hours as the country prepares for heavy and persistent rain.
The yellow alert will be effective from 6 pm tomorrow until the end of Friday, covering areas in central and eastern Scotland. The Met Office forecasts that rain, starting intermittently on Wednesday, will intensify and become heavy over elevated areas later in the day, continuing into Thursday and potentially Friday. This could result in flooding in some regions.
Rainfall amounts of 30mm to 60mm are anticipated widely, with up to 120mm likely over higher exposed ground affected by strong southeasterly winds. Flooding of homes and businesses, disruptions to bus and train services, and longer travel times due to spray and flooding on roads are all possibilities. Residents in affected areas are advised to plan their journeys ahead and prepare for potential power outages by gathering torches, batteries, a mobile phone power pack, and other essential items.
The rain warning is currently the sole alert issued by the Met Office for Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. Meanwhile, a yellow wind warning remains in effect for a significant portion of South West England and Wales until 4 pm today.
The Met Office’s forecast for Wednesday indicates an unsettled day with rain bands moving northward. Some periods of sunshine may occur between the rain bands. It is expected to remain windy, with temperatures around or slightly above average.
Looking ahead to Thursday to Saturday, the forecast suggests continued unsettled conditions with more rain or showers across much of the UK. Scotland may experience persistent rain, with potential snowfall on high ground. Windy conditions are expected to persist, while temperatures will remain close to average.
