Tragic Death of Italian Woman in Dog Attack

Date:

A 60-year-old mother of two was discovered deceased in a wooded area with severe dog bites. The body was found by a man who promptly alerted emergency services on Thursday, April 23. Despite efforts to revive her, the victim, identified as Lucia Tognela, could not be saved.

Lucia, a resident of Bianzone, Italy, was believed to be taking a solitary walk in Trivigno di Tirano when her body was located. Law enforcement has confiscated five dogs of the Dogo Argentino breed from a local resident who was the first to come across her.

Witnesses and residents reported that the dogs, identified as mastiff-type Dogo Argentinos, were frequently allowed to roam without leashes or muzzles. The dog owner allegedly ignored previous incidents of the dogs attacking hikers, despite receiving complaints and police scrutiny since relocating to the area three years ago.

An autopsy has been scheduled to determine if Lucia experienced a sudden medical event, such as a heart attack, prior to the dog bites, or if she was fatally mauled. Family members indicated that Lucia had no known medical conditions. DNA tests on saliva samples from her wounds will ascertain if the seized dogs were responsible for the injuries.

The dog owner had allegedly noticed one of his dogs covered in blood before discovering Lucia’s body. He may face charges for failing to control his pets and potential manslaughter.

Authorities have ruled out wild animal attacks, such as those by wolves or bears, as confirmed by NeedToKnow.

While the Dogo Argentino breed is banned in the UK under the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991, it remains legal in Italy.

Lucia, who was married and previously worked as a surveyor, leaves behind two grown children. She enjoyed hiking and singing in a local choir in Villa di Tirano, where she once served as a council member. Despite having a second residence in Trivigno di Tirano, she reportedly had a fear of dogs.

Mayor Franco Marantelli Colombin of Villa di Tirano expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy, emphasizing the aggressiveness of the dog breed and the need for responsible ownership. He extended sympathy to Lucia’s family during this difficult time.
