A hosepipe ban will affect numerous households in the UK amidst ongoing high temperatures this summer.
South West Water (SWW) has announced the implementation of the ban in various parts of Devon starting from midday on July 14, with restrictions on activities like garden watering, pool filling, and car washing now in place.
Specific areas impacted by the ban include Tiverton, Cullompton, Bampton, Honiton, South Molton, Dunkeswell, Axminster, and Lyme Regis.
SWW’s decision follows two recent heatwaves in the UK that led to a surge in water demand, especially in the mentioned regions, with an increase of approximately 5.4 million litres per day despite continuous operation of treatment facilities.
David Harris, the Managing Director for Water Services at South West Water, highlighted the strain on the water network due to the prolonged hot weather, stressing the company’s efforts to maintain water supply and the necessity of the imposed hosepipe restrictions.
Additional measures undertaken by SWW include deploying extra tankers for water transportation, boosting leak detection teams, and redirecting water resources from less affected neighboring areas.
