A recent study by digital healthcare provider Voy uncovered that over 50% of individuals in the UK who have tried GLP‑1 weight loss medication have kept it confidential. The research found that 83% of eligible adults believe there is a stigma associated with using weight loss medication, leading many users of injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy to hide their treatment from loved ones due to fear of judgment.
The launch of a new oral GLP‑1 weight loss pill in the UK aims to offer a more discreet treatment option. Respondents expressed concerns that using weight loss medication could lead to assumptions of taking shortcuts or lacking self-discipline, as well as the belief that weight loss should solely result from lifestyle changes.
Despite the potential health benefits of GLP‑1 medication, some individuals are hesitant to try it due to various reasons like fear of injections, worries about costs, or concerns about side effects. Voy suggests that the introduction of oral GLP‑1 treatments could change the perception and accessibility of weight management support by providing a more affordable and convenient alternative.
According to the research, 69% of eligible adults would prefer a daily oral weight loss medication over a weekly injection. Dr. Earim Chaudry, Chief Medical Officer at Voy, emphasized the importance of the new oral GLP‑1 medication in expanding treatment options and potentially reducing barriers to care.
While advancements in treatment options are promising, societal stigma surrounding obesity persists. Dr. Chaudry highlighted the need for a shift in how obesity is viewed and discussed, emphasizing that changing perceptions requires more than just introducing new forms of treatment.
