The mother of a man who was stabbed in an anti-Semitic terrorist incident has provided an update on her son’s condition. In Golders Green, London, police responded to the stabbing of two men, aged 76 and 34, on Wednesday. Medical assistance was given to the victims, and the Metropolitan Police later confirmed the attack as a terrorist act.
A 45-year-old British man, who arrived in the UK from Somalia as a child, has been taken into custody. The suspect was spotted carrying a blade on the street and was apprehended after being subdued with a stun gun.
The mother of Shloime Rand, the 34-year-old victim, informed the BBC that her son is now in stable condition. She expressed shock at the incident occurring in London streets, within a peaceful community striving to avoid harm to anyone. She recounted how Shloime was innocently walking on the street before the attack, and she hopes for his return home before Shabbat.
The police cordon around the location of the attack on the two Jewish men in Golders Green has been removed. The sealed-off areas of Highfield Avenue, Beverley Gardens, and Golders Green Road were reopened by 7 am on Thursday, allowing traffic flow in both directions on Golders Green Road.
Footage from body-worn cameras capturing the moment the suspect was subdued and arrested has been made public. The video shows the suspect, a Somali-born British national, wielding a knife and advancing towards police officers. Officers deployed Tasers to bring him down as he resisted, eventually leading to his arrest on suspicion of attempted murder.
During the arrest, officers urged the suspect to drop the knife as they wrestled him to the ground. A plain-clothed individual, potentially from the Jewish community security team, managed to disarm the suspect. The suspect was handcuffed and detained on the road, with no reported issues regarding the arrest process according to the police oversight authority.
