Ryanair, known for its affordable ticket prices, has gained a reputation for its stringent luggage regulations. Despite clear guidelines provided during booking and on the airline’s website, travelers often find themselves unaware of these rules.
A recent adjustment to Ryanair’s baggage policy increased the dimensions allowed for the complimentary underseat bag included with basic fares. Previously restricted to 40 x 25 x 20 cm, passengers can now bring a bag measuring up to 40 x 30 x 20 cm. This small item, which can be a laptop bag, handbag, or rucksack, must fit under the seat in front of the traveler.
For an additional fee, passengers have the option to carry a second cabin bag weighing up to 10kg. This bag can measure up to 55 x 40 x 20cm and must be stowed in the overhead locker by the passenger. Moreover, checked luggage options include 10kg, 20kg, and 23kg bags.
Despite ample warnings, a family recently incurred a £400 fee at the airport for not adhering to the bag size regulations. They allegedly failed to check their bags’ dimensions before their return flight to the UK.
In response to such incidents, Ryanair emphasized the importance of complying with the specified bag dimensions to avoid additional charges. The airline’s sizers are larger than the permitted dimensions, ensuring that bags meeting the criteria are allowed on board.
To prevent incurring extra costs when flying with Ryanair, travelers should ensure their bags fit within the designated measurements as gate crew may verify bag sizes. It is recommended to measure the packed bag, accounting for potential bulges when full, including wheels and handles in the dimensions.
Ryanair’s website cautions passengers against bringing oversize bags to the boarding gate, as these may be rejected or placed in the aircraft hold for a fee. Additionally, passengers must book the second cabin bag in advance to guarantee acceptance at the gate, as non-priority customers may face fees for last-minute additions.
