On Mother’s Day, a day dedicated to honoring mothers, Molly J. Gladney experienced a tragic event when her own son brutally attacked her, leaving her to die in front of her home. The relationship between Molly, 66, and her estranged son, Antonio Gladney, had always been tumultuous, influenced by Antonio’s criminal background and time spent in and out of prison.
After years of no contact, Antonio, a resident of Mississippi on parole, decided to visit his mother on Mother’s Day in 2017. What seemed like a potential moment of reconciliation turned into a horrifying ordeal. Upon arriving armed with flowers and a card at Molly’s residence in Shannon, Mississippi, Antonio engaged in a heated argument with his mother. The situation escalated when he violently struck her with a large garden tool, continuing to assault her with his fists before dragging her battered body to the carport, where he left her to perish.
The authorities were alerted by an alarm call and discovered Molly’s lifeless body outside her home. Antonio was apprehended after returning to the scene and later confessed to the crime. The Lee County Sheriff’s Office in Mississippi revealed details of the assault, describing a scene of struggle inside and outside the house that resulted in fatal injuries to Molly.
During his court appearance, Antonio admitted to killing his mother, expressing remorse and citing emotional turmoil and substance influence as contributing factors. Subsequently, he exhibited violent behavior by brandishing a shank at a corrections officer while in custody, leading to additional charges of aggravated assault. As a consequence of his actions, Antonio was sentenced to 25 years in prison for multiple offenses.
