On a sunny day in January 1970, Carole Grimmer brought her four young children to Fairy Meadow Beach in Wollongong, a popular seaside town just over an hour’s drive south of Sydney. Carole, who had moved to Australia from Knowle, near Bristol, two years prior, entrusted her eldest child, Ricki, who was seven at the time, to look after his siblings. As the day at the beach came to an end, Ricki took his brothers Stephen and Paul, along with their little sister Cheryl, to the shower block to rinse off sand.
While Ricki, Stephen, and Paul swiftly returned to their mother, three-year-old Cheryl stubbornly stayed behind in the shower block and tragically disappeared. A 17-year-old suspect later confessed to being involved in Cheryl’s disappearance, admitting to grabbing her as she lagged behind and unintentionally causing harm to her.
The suspect, known in court documents as “Mercury,” confessed to the authorities that he restrained Cheryl to prevent her from making noise and later disposed of her belongings to avoid detection. Despite the confession, no formal charges were brought against him, leaving Cheryl’s case unresolved.
Efforts to locate Cheryl included a search involving around 1,000 people immediately after her disappearance, with witnesses reporting sightings of a suspicious individual carrying a small girl. A ransom note demanding money for Cheryl’s return was dismissed as a hoax, leading to a decrease in investigative activities.
Years later, “Mercury” came forward with a confession, but legal complexities prevented his prosecution for Cheryl’s murder. Subsequent investigations led to his arrest in 2017, but legal technicalities hindered the case from progressing. Despite ongoing efforts to seek justice for Cheryl, her body has never been found, and her disappearance remains a haunting mystery.
Recently, a legislative council member publicly revealed details about “Mercury” and his confession, urging him to come forward and admit to his actions.
