A man has been sentenced to four years in prison for assaulting a woman in an alarming incident that was brought to the attention of UK authorities by Barron Trump, the youngest son of Donald Trump. Matvei Rumiantsev, a Russian national, received his sentence at Snaresbrook Crown Court after Barron witnessed the assault via a video call.
During the trial, the 20-year-old Barron informed police that he saw Rumiantsev physically attacking his friend in London on January 18 of the previous year. Prosecutors revealed that Rumiantsev’s actions stemmed from jealousy towards the victim’s friendship with Mr. Trump, noting the urgency and concern in Barron’s call to the police.
Apart from the assault conviction, Rumiantsev was also found guilty of perverting the course of justice for attempting to persuade the victim to retract her accusations while he was in prison. However, he was acquitted of rape and intentional strangulation charges, as well as another rape and assault case alleged to have taken place in November 2024.
The judge presiding over the case declared that Rumiantsev should face deportation upon completing his sentence, emphasizing that if deportation does not occur, he would be released on license after serving 40% of his four-year term. Rumiantsev will be under supervision and subject to return to custody if he violates the terms of his license for the remaining duration.
In court, it was pointed out that Rumiantsev showed signs of jealousy and refused to take responsibility for his actions. The judge criticized his lack of empathy and accountability, highlighting his attempts to shift blame onto the victim. The evidence presented indicated that the victim endured a prolonged beating, with Rumiantsev inflicting physical harm and instilling fear of death during the hour-long ordeal.
Barron Trump’s testimony, provided via email to the investigating authorities, corroborated the distressing nature of the incident. He described witnessing a brief yet impactful moment of the assault during the video call, underscoring the severity of the situation.
