The parents of Madeleine McCann have expressed disappointment over not being consulted or asked for permission during the production of a new true crime drama centered on their daughter’s disappearance. Channel 5’s show, “Under Suspicion: Kate McCann,” portrays Madeleine’s mother as a suspect in the investigation that took place in May 2007, a portrayal that the McCanns claim they had no part in developing.
The drama, which aired recently with Laura Bayston from Slow Horses in the lead role as Kate McCann, prompted a statement from Kate and Gerry addressing their concerns about the negative impact such programs have on their family, especially as they continue to cope with the enduring mystery of Madeleine’s disappearance, now 19 years on.
Expressing gratitude for the support they have received, the McCanns shared their disappointment at the airing of the Channel 5 production, which they were neither consulted about nor involved in creating. They stated that such programs only serve to have a detrimental effect on their family.
Madeleine McCann vanished from her family’s vacation apartment in Praia da Luz, Portugal, on May 3, 2007, just before her fourth birthday. The Portuguese authorities had considered Kate and Gerry as suspects in the case for a period of 10 months between September 2007 and July 2008. The new dramatization focuses on Kate’s interrogation during that time and is based on official police documents, evidence from documentaries, and recorded testimonies.
This 90-minute film was scripted by the acclaimed writer Philip Ralph and directed by Paula Wittig, known for her work on Black Widow. Channel 5 has been approached by the Mirror for comment on the matter.
