A British couple faced a challenging situation in the Atlantic Ocean when the mast of their self-constructed sailing vessel broke during strong winds. Sam Coltman, 32, and his partner Kelda Smith, 31, were sailing on their boat named Tonks, located 350 miles off the Azores coast when the incident occurred recently.
The couple, who had been sailing across Europe, the east coast of the United States, and the Caribbean for three years, were on their way back to Falmouth in Cornwall when the mast malfunctioned. This mishap happened 25 days and approximately 2,200 miles into their journey from St Martin to the Azores, following a prior engine breakdown due to a faulty water pump.
Sam recounted the shock of realizing the mast was damaged, mentioning the boat’s significance as their home for six years that they had painstakingly built from scratch. Despite the challenges, Sam, Kelda, and their friend Alessa Decker remained optimistic as they navigated towards land, fashioning a temporary sail and progressing at a slow pace of two knots.
To cover the escalating repair costs and aid in their recovery, friends initiated a fundraiser for the couple, emphasizing the importance of the vessel to Sam and Kelda. The fundraising target is £12,000, with over £7,000 already donated. Emergency services have been alerted about their situation, and plans are in place to provide assistance as they continue their journey towards Cornwall.
The couple’s friend, Jasper Troje Tuck, who spearheaded the fundraising efforts, expressed relief that everyone on board was safe but acknowledged the challenges ahead. The focus now is on overcoming the aftermath of the mast failure, procuring essential equipment, repairing the boat, and safely returning Tonks to Cornwall.
For those willing to contribute to the fundraiser, a link is provided for donations. Sam and Kelda are determined to reach their repair goal and appreciate the support received thus far, as they persevere through their maritime ordeal.
