Metropolitan police officers are being encouraged to engage with fans at large events by taking selfies in an effort to address violence against women and girls. The UK’s largest police force has committed to combating predatory behavior by increasing their presence at concerts and sports games. While patrolling Wembley Stadium in London, officers shared that they are advised to interact positively with attendees, including taking photos with them.
Inspector Shaz Bassi, who is leading the initiative, emphasized the importance of creating a positive first impression with the public, especially those who may not have had prior interactions with law enforcement. The approach aims to build trust and confidence, as the majority of people attending these events are there to have a good time and appreciate the presence of police officers.
During a recent event like the Summertime Ball at Wembley, over 100 officers were on patrol, but larger gatherings can see up to six times more personnel deployed. This strategy follows public trust concerns stemming from high-profile cases like the Sarah Everard tragedy involving a Met officer and multiple incidents of violence against women.
The Metropolitan Police reported positive outcomes from their approach, noting a significant increase in reports of violence against women and girls, as well as domestic abuse and rape cases. Claire Argyle from the Violence Against Women and Girls team at the Met highlighted the success of their initiatives in reducing violence and expressed that the public appreciates the visible presence of officers at various events.
To support this effort, around 23,000 Met officers and staff have undergone specialized training on violence against women, and the force has enhanced its victim support services. These measures signify a proactive approach by the Metropolitan Police to address and prevent violence against women and girls in the community.
