“Tragic Demise of Former Politician in Rural Retreat”

Date:

Over 15 years ago, Ann Widdecombe made a significant change in her life, leaving the political scene for a more peaceful rural setting.

In 2010, the outspoken political figure relocated from London to the serene village of Haytor on Dartmoor. Opting for a quieter lifestyle surrounded by nature, she purchased a secluded five-bedroom chalet-bungalow away from the hustle and bustle of city life.

However, the tranquil abode she selected for her retirement has now become the focal point of a homicide inquiry. Devon police recently confirmed the demise of the 78-year-old former Conservative minister turned Reform UK politician and TV personality, who was discovered deceased with severe injuries at her expansive property. A 26-year-old white British male has been apprehended on suspicion of the crime.

In a 2019 interview, Widdecombe expressed her determination to avoid retiring in London, seeking instead a cozy atmosphere with scenic views and wildlife in her surroundings. Haytor, indeed, met her criteria perfectly. Isolated from urban life, the secluded village offered a stark contrast to the busy streets of SW1.

Featuring only one hotel, the closest M&S Simply Food store is over five miles away. Exeter, the nearest city, requires a car journey of more than 40 minutes. Widdecombe’s living room overlooks a vast garden with a pond adorned by gnomes, while her sitting area boasts vibrant red carpeting.

Embracing the desolate beauty of the Dartmoor hills, Widdecombe cherished the solitude of her new residence, often relishing solitary walks across the moors. Describing her decision to settle in the area, she shared, “I opted for a five-bedroom 1970s chalet bungalow near Haytor, on Dartmoor.

“It was a choice between that and the northwest Scottish Highlands, but I felt the Highlands were too remote. Also, I had always envisioned moving to this region. My parents hailed from Devon, so I spent my childhood here, frequently exploring Dartmoor.”

“I adore the starkness. I continue to wander the moors and sometimes go an entire day without encountering another soul, which is incredibly peaceful.”

Despite bidding farewell to her political career in Westminster, Widdecombe remained active in the public eye. She participated in TV shows like Celebrity Big Brother, Strictly Come Dancing, and even starred in pantomimes. Until her demise, she made regular trips to London for appearances on GB News.

Her involvement in Strictly Come Dancing even funded the construction of a swimming pool at her vast Dartmoor residence. Reflecting on this, she remarked, “I always desired a heated swimming pool, and I acquired one through my participation in Strictly Come Dancing.

“People often inquire about the number of laps I swim, but I do not view it as exercise. It’s a place for relaxation. I have friends and family who prefer to swim 40 laps before breakfast… Oh, spare me.”
