Andy Burnham Sworn In as UK Prime Minister, Reveals New Cabinet

Date:

Andy Burnham took office as the United Kingdom’s seventh Prime Minister within a decade on Monday and immediately delved into his new responsibilities. His first day commenced with an official meeting with the King at Buckingham Palace before he delivered his inaugural address as PM outside No 10. Burnham promptly announced his new Cabinet lineup.

The Makerfield MP, who returned to Parliament in June after serving as Mayor of Greater Manchester, was formally elected as the Leader of the Labour Party last Friday. The transition occurred after Sir Keir Starmer resigned, leading to the King inviting Burnham to form a new government.

In his first speech as Prime Minister outside Downing Street, Burnham promised to provide immediate relief for families struggling with the cost of living crisis, vowed to tackle rough sleeping, and outlined his plan to rejuvenate British industries. He emphasized the need for a fresh political and economic approach, declaring it a pivotal moment for the nation to demonstrate its resilience to the world.

Burnham acknowledged public frustration with politics and pledged to improve, calling for a transformative period for Britain with significant changes in governance and economics. Sir John Healey emerged as a key appointment, taking on the role of Chancellor of the Exchequer in Burnham’s government.

Following the Cabinet reshuffle, former Labour leader Ed Miliband was appointed as Foreign Secretary, Yvette Cooper shifted to the health portfolio, and Bridget Phillipson transitioned to Minister for Women and Equalities. Angela Rayner assumed the position of Housing Secretary, while Louise Haigh was appointed First Secretary of State and Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster.

Wes Streeting, a former health secretary, was named the new Defence Secretary. Several prominent figures retained their positions, including Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander and Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood. Pat McFadden remained as the Work and Pensions Secretary.

Shortly after entering No 10, Burnham engaged in discussions with US President Donald Trump, who extended his wishes for success. Trump expressed confidence in Burnham’s abilities and assured US support. Burnham also held talks with other global leaders such as Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelensky, French President Emmanuel Macron, and Nato Secretary General Mark Rutte.

EU President Antonio Costa congratulated Burnham on his appointment, emphasizing the need for continued cooperation between the UK and EU for mutual benefit. The UK and EU partnership was highlighted as essential for their strength and unity.
