Pressure mounts on Reform’s Robert Jenrick to issue an apology following allegations of sharing a manipulated quote from Labour’s new migration minister as a tactic for political gain. The former Conservative member stirred controversy by sharing a video clip implying that Jo White, recently appointed as part of Shabana Mahmood’s Home Office team, expressed indifference towards halting small boats. However, Ms. White later clarified with a full audio recording, confirming her actual statement as, “I don’t care who will stop the boats… my number one priority is to stop those boats.”
In a now-deleted post on a social platform, Mr. Jenrick asserted that Ms. White had said, “I don’t care if we stop the boats,” and further criticized Andy Burnham for his stance on preventing boat crossings.
Despite deleting the post on Thursday morning, Mr. Jenrick defended his decision to share the content, stating that he still stands by it. In response, a dismayed Ms. White shared the authentic recording of her remarks with constituents, condemning the deliberate misrepresentation by Reform and calling for a retraction and immediate apology.
While Mr. Jenrick removed the post, he has not issued an apology. Labour MP Jacob Collier criticized the dissemination of the doctored clip, labeling it as a departure from healthy democratic debate. Additionally, Mike Tapp, a former Home Office minister under Keir Starmer, demanded an apology from Mr. Jenrick for spreading misinformation about a Labour Minister.
During an interview with Talk TV’s Jeremy Kyle, Mr. Jenrick defended his actions by claiming he received the clip from individuals present at the meeting, emphasizing the importance of clarifying Ms. White’s actual position. Despite facing backlash, Mr. Jenrick maintained that he sees no fault in his actions and expressed willingness to give Ms. White the benefit of the doubt.
A spokesperson for Reform UK attributed the shortened quote shared by Mr. Jenrick to news outlet Guido Fawkes, suggesting a potential oversight in the information received. In response, Guido Fawkes defended its reporting, urging individuals to review their website before referencing their content.
