The UK is facing an increased risk of wildfires with over 200 incidents reported in the past 12 days, according to official sources. Areas like London, the South East, and East of England are particularly vulnerable during the ongoing heatwave due to the dry and hot conditions. The UK Health Security Agency has issued an amber heat-health alert for regions including the East Midlands, East and South East of England, and London, in effect until Thursday. This alert aims to address health risks, especially for vulnerable groups like the elderly, as high temperatures persist.
As of now, a total of 706 wildfires have been documented by fire and rescue services in England and Wales this year. Between July 16 and 28 alone, 208 wildfire incidents were recorded, as reported by the National Fire Chiefs Council (NFCC). These figures exclude wildfires in Scotland and Northern Ireland, such as the ongoing battle against a blaze in Cairngorms, Scotland, which has forced families to evacuate their homes.
While eight active wildfire incidents are being monitored across the UK, fire authorities stress that the risk remains high nationwide. Notably, progress is being made at the major wildfire site in Tintwistle Moor, Derbyshire, where a team of 60 firefighters is currently deployed. Despite the lower wildfire numbers compared to last year, NFCC warns that the dry conditions, warmer temperatures, and agricultural activities in rural areas could lead to rapid fire outbreaks.
