A tragic incident resulted in the death of a young girl who sustained severe injuries in a car accident that also claimed the life of her mother. The girl, identified as nine-year-old Irena (Ira) Mereacre, had been hospitalized since the crash in County Cavan, Ireland. Her mother, Nell Raven, was fatally injured in the accident that occurred on Friday. Authorities confirmed the passing of Irena on Tuesday.
Irena and Ms. Raven, a 53-year-old writer and journalist who had recently obtained Irish citizenship, were involved in a collision between their vehicle and a flatbed van near the village of Shercock around 4:30 pm on Friday, according to the Irish Mirror.
Ms. Raven was pronounced dead at the scene, while her daughter sustained serious injuries and was promptly transported to Temple Street Hospital in Dublin, where she succumbed to her injuries on Tuesday.
The Irish police, Gardai, issued a statement indicating ongoing investigations into the fatal road traffic collision that took place on the R162 at Corclare, Shercock, Co. Cavan, on Friday, July 24, 2026. The statement mentioned that the car and flatbed van collision occurred after 4:30 pm, resulting in the death of the car’s driver, a woman in her 50s, at the scene. The female juvenile passenger was taken to Temple Street Hospital, where she passed away on July 28, 2026.
