Victims of various bombings, including the 1973 Old Bailey bombing in London, the 1996 London Docklands bombing, and the 1996 Arndale shopping center bombing in Manchester, are accusing Mr. Adams of being a key figure within the Provisional IRA at the time, potentially part of its Army Council.
These victims have initiated legal proceedings against the former Sinn Fein president, seeking nominal damages of £1. Gerry Adams has refuted any association with the Provisional IRA and is contesting the allegations.
During his recent arrival at the Royal Courts of Justice, Mr. Adams was observed wearing what seemed to be a stab-proof vest and was escorted into the premises. The court in London was informed that the accusers aim to demonstrate Mr. Adams’ alleged involvement with the Provisional IRA during those turbulent periods and prove his level of engagement in the bombing incidents.
Anne Studd KC, representing the victims, began the case by stating that Mr. Adams played a direct role in the decisions made by the Provisional IRA to conduct bombings in Britain. She highlighted the distinction Mr. Adams tries to make between his association with the Army and Sinn Fein, emphasizing that the evidence will reveal otherwise.
Ms. Studd stressed that a comprehensive set of testimonies from individuals familiar with Mr. Adams will build the case against him, emphasizing that the bombings on the UK mainland could not have occurred without his knowledge and approval as a member of the Provisional IRA and later the Army Council.
In concluding her argument, Ms. Studd underlined that while Mr. Adams played a part in the peace process in Northern Ireland, the claimants assert that he also contributed to the conflict based on the evidence presented.
After the first day of the trial, Mr. Adams reiterated his stance, declaring his commitment to defending himself against the allegations. The trial is anticipated to conclude next week.
